Becoming a Deacon

CONTEMPORARY U.S. DIACONAL PROGRAMS

Individuals who are called to serve Christ and his church as a deacon may want to consider the following programs.  Each program is structured differently, but all have the goal of providing candidates with the spiritual, liturgical and educational background necessary to be considered for ordination.

American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese
“The Diocesan Deaconate Program is a three-year course of study, which takes place either at Christ the Saviour Seminary, or via extension at various locations in the diocese as need arises.”  The program only accepts candidates for the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox diocese.

Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese
“St. Stephen’s Course of Studies is a three-year correspondence program designed for those who wish to study Orthodox theology but who are unable to attend an Orthodox seminary. Those ordained as clergy within other Christian churches and who hold a Master of Divinity degree from a non-Orthodox seminary may enroll in the St. Stephen’s Course of Studies as part of their path to ordination in the Orthodox Church. The program is also suitable for anyone seeking advanced training in Christian Education or Youth Ministry, and those who, with the blessing of their bishop, wish to prepare for ordination to the diaconate. While this program is primarily a long-distance program, it does require three units of a Residency Program at Antiochian Village.”

Greek Orthodox Archdiocese
“The Special Program for the Diaconate (SPD) is an educational and formational initiative of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.  The program is intended for individuals who are interested in serving the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America as deacons and is designed to prepare individuals for service to the Church as deacons.  Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate of Study.  Although the program is primarily designed for individuals affiliated with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, persons from other jurisdictions may apply to participate in the program.”

Orthodox Church in America
“The Diaconal Vocations Program (DVP) is a program of theological study, spiritual and pastoral development, and liturgical training  providing academic preparation for men who may be called to ordination to the Holy Diaconate but unable to attend a seminary.

It is also designed to address specific academic and pastoral issues of non-Orthodox clergy – who may have already earned a theological degree such as an M.Div. – who are seeking entry into the Orthodox Church and may eventually be called to Holy Orders.

The goal of the DVP is to use a process of clergy-guided and clergy-mentored reading and studying to teach candidates a fundamental foundation of Orthodox theology and prepare them for the practical aspects of diaconal service.”

The Miami Diaconal Formation Porgram is a program of the Orthodox Church in America Diocese of the South that “offers face-to-face training and mentorship. . . . to learn the skills needed for the Holy Diaconate.”
