Dr. Evangelos Theodorou

Dr. Evangelos Theodorou, Emeritus Professor and Former Rector at the University of Athens, Greece, and member of the European Academy of the Sciences and the Arts, served for many years as the editor of the highly respected national Greek Orthodox journal, Theologia, and presently serves as a senior advisor on numerous topics, especially pertaining to theology, liturgics and ecumenical witness.
Dr. Theodorou  pioneered the modern study of women deacons in the Orthodox Church with the publication of Heroines of Love:  Deaconesses through the Ages (Athens:  Apostolliki Diakonia of the Church of Greece, 1949).   His doctoral dissertation in 1954, The ‘Ordination’ or ‘Appointment’ of Deaconesses, concluded that the rite to ordain women deacons was a sacramental ordination.   In 1996 in honor of the birth of St. Nektarios of Aegina (d. 1920) a Centennial Celebration entitled “The Institution of Deaconesses according to Orthodox Tradition and St. Nektarios” was held, and Dr. Theodoou presented a lecture stressing the need for re-establishment of the order.
